3 terms – 24 units – TESOL Certificate Program

* 9 transferable credits in bachelor program, 6 transferable credits in M.Div. program, and 3 transferable credits in M.IS.Edu. program

* Distance Education available

The Certificate Program in TESOL is open to foreign individuals who want to obtain the certificate in TESOL in the country where they are willing to serve as English teachers and who are from any academic disciplines interested in teaching English to speakers of other languages. All the potential students are required to show their English communication proficiency to be accepted on the basis of the tests and interview given by the tester of the VINE UNIVERSITY TESOL INSTITUTE (VUTI) or they are required to get satisfactory pass grades for Communicative English 1, 2, 3 given by VUTI for 3 semesters.

This program provides a sound theoretical foundation and the practical classroom experiences necessary to pursue teaching opportunities for the foreign students who want to learn basic English Communication skills in their countries.

Faculty members are those who own a wealth of teaching expertise, diverse research interests and cross-cultural experiences. TESOL certificate students are expected to have diverse backgrounds and to bring a wide range of practical experiences to the classroom.

Courses are available on either a part-time or full-time basis during the academic year under the supervision of the VINE UNIVERSITY TESOL INSTITUTE. The entire certificate program can be completed by special intensive program during the summer and winter vacation in America.

This program is not designed for K-12 ESOL certification.

Pre-Courses

Students who are conditionally admitted by the Vine University TESOL Institute must be completed the following Communicative English courses with pass grades.

Communicative English (1) (beginners level)

Communicative English (2) (intermediate level)

Communicative English (3) (advanced level)

 The First Semester

TESL 501 STRUCTURE OF ENGLISH FOR ESOL (3su)

Overview of traditional English grammar on the basis of sense group grammar and comparison of applied linguistics research on second language acquisition and the implications for the classroom.

TESL 502 Intercultural Communication for Teaching ESOL (3su)

Cross-cultural communication study between English culture and target culture on the basis of contrastive analysis for language teaching.

TESL 502 TEACHING SPEAKING AND LISTENING (3su)

Overview of teaching methods and techniques in the practical class for speaking and listening on the basis of sense group grammar.

TESL 503 TEACHING READING AND WRITING (3su)

Overview of teaching methods and techniques in the practical classroom for reading and writing for ESL on the basis of ‘sense group grammar’.

The Second Semester

TESL 504 Theory and Practice of Teaching ESOL (3su)

Introduces students to techniques and practical methods for teching ESL. Includes curriculum development, classroom observations, and hands-on experience.

TESL 506 Language Assessment (3su)

Overview of language assessment tools as applied to ESL evaluation. Students will be given practical experience in the application of various language testing tools.

 The Third Semester

TESL 507 Curriculum and Materials Development (3su)

Examination of curriculum development and its relationship to materials to accommodate various learning styles.

TESL 508 Technology for ESL Teaching and Learning (3su)

This course provides opportunity to use and develop skills for supporting ESL teaching in the classroom by use of modern technology available in the field and it expands the students’ use of current technology as it relates to teaching.

TESL 510 Teaching Practicum (3su)

Observation and practical ESL teaching in the real classroom situations.
